Orchestra Elective

Orchestra is an elective class offered in grades 6, 7, and 8. It meets three periods per cycle and is a full year course.

Students who play violin, viola, cello and string bass may participate in this class specifically designed to meet middle school needs. In order to be eligible students must either have taken orchestra the year before or be able to demonstrate mastery of the skills listed on the "Competency Checklist" provided by the private or the school ensemble teacher. This checklist may also be obtained from the Performing Arts Office at the Middle School.

The repertoire for the Middle School Orchestras is drawn primarily from the Baroque and Classical periods but is supplemented with later stylistic periods and genres. Orchestras perform in regularly scheduled school concerts and may also be involved in off campus programs.

To participate fully, private lessons are strongly recommended. Students who study their instruments privately will progress faster and find that the ensemble provides strong opportunities to experience preparing for, and playing in, the performance setting. Please see the Lessons page for more information. See also the 2010-2011 WMS Orchestra Handbook and Guidelines for a complete description of the WMS Orchestra elective
