WELLESLEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS PERFORMING ARTS "The
House of Blue Leaves" - first performed off-Broadway in 1971 and then
again in a 2011 revival starring Ben Stiller, Edie Falco, and Jennifer Jason Leigh
- will be Wellesley High School's inaugural spring play in the new WHS drama classroom's
theater this May. Centered on the Pope's 1965 visit to New York City, the black
comedy features nuns, a political bombing, a GI headed for Vietnam, a zookeeper
who dreams of making it big in Hollywood, his schizophrenic stay-at-home wife
Bananas, and his vivacious mistress Bunny. Come see this crazy mix of comedy and
tragedy, truth and absurdity. Performances will be in Wellesley High School, Drama
Room 165, on Thursday-Saturday, May 3-5 with shows at 4 and 7:30 PM each day.

to the 1:00 and 2:00 Jazz Bands for their performances at MAJE on 3/14!CONGRATULATIONS
to the WHS 1:00 Jazz Band who earned a Silver Medal at the MAJE Jazz Festival
on Wednesday. Nathan Bolton, Peter Garland and Michael Youniss received Outstanding
Musicianship awards. Brian Rappaport was named the MVP for the ENTIRE B-Division
of bands! ...and CONGRATULATIONS to the WHS 2:00 Jazz Band who earned a
Gold Medal at MAJE. Harvey Xia, Brian Rolincik and Steven Povich earned Outstanding
Musicianship Awards! BOTH Bands will be going on to the State Finals in
Framingham on March 24! ...and CONGRATULATIONS to the WHS 2:00 Jazz Band
who came in 2nd Place at the prestigious Berklee Jazz Festival in Boston on Saturday!
Matt DiBiase was selected for an Outstanding Musicianship Award! We were awarded
more than $3000 in scholarships for our students to attend Berklee's summer jazz
studies program!

"Bandtastic!": At the February step-up band concert, Wellesley Performing
Arts Department Director Elizabeth Perry and faculty members Henry Platt and Steven
Scott brought together the 37 Grade 8 Band members and the 96 members of the WHS
Concert Band and Wwind Ensemble. The Grade 8 Band opened the evening with John
Higgins' "Pueblo" and a John Williams trilogy. The WHS Concert Band
then performed Roland Barrett's "Structures" and "Tangents Angular,"
and the Wind Ensemble followed with a Sergey Prokofiev march and Leonard Bernstein's
"Candide" overture. To conclude the concert, all bands joined together
to play two uplifting pieces, Matthew Wilder and David Zippel's "Mulan,"
conducted by Mr. Platt, and Robert Sheldon's "Spontaneous Combustion,"
directed by Mr. Scott. Photo: Mr. Platt, who will soon celebrate his 25th year
teaching and conducting in the Wellesley Public Schools, conducts "Mulan."
WHS Students Win at Emerson College Theater Festival WHS
students Anna Bortnick 14 (right) and Charles Coleman 13 (lelft) will
perform playwright Claire Reeves one-act piece Stuck at the
Emerson College Theater Festival on January 28th. The play is directed by Julia
Rufo 12 (center), with stage management by Tessie Connors 13. The
students won the honor of representing Wellesley by taking first place in the
WHS one-act play festival in December. NEW!
UPDATE:
Congratulations to Anna Bortnick and Charles Coleman who received "Outstanding
Acting" awards and Julia Rufo 12' who received an "Outstanding Directing"
award at the Emerson College High School Theatre Festival this weekend.
Julia's piece, STUCK, was part of her work in the Honors Acting IV class. Also,
congratulations to Kay Kelley who advanced to the Finals in the English Speaking
Union's Shakespeare Competition.She had to perform her monologue and
sonnet in front of several sets of judges. She is the first student to receive
this honor in 9 years. She will compete again this Sunday at Emerson College for
the chance to represent the state at the national competition in NYC.

Master Class at WHS!
On February 19, 2012
at 3:00pm in the choir room, the WHS Choral Department hosted a voice masterclass
with voiceteacher and opera singer Cherie Caluda. Cherie is a voice teacher from
the Hartt School located at the University of Hartford. As a professional singer,
Miss Caluda sang with such opera companies as New Orleans Opera, Sarasota Opera,
Buffalo Opera, and San Francisco Opera's touring company, Western Opera Theater.
Her roles have included Pamina and Papagena in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte,
Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème, Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata, the title
role of Massenet's Manon, Norina in Donizetti's Don Pasquale, Micaëla and
Frasquita in Bizet's Carmen, the Sandman and Dew Fairy in Humperdinck's Hansel
und Gretel, Tytania in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Antonia in Les Contes
d'Hoffman, and Miss Silverpeal in Mozart's The Impresario. In the masterclass,
Cherie worked with WHS students Anna Morrison, Madeleine Beimford, Matt Norwood,
Lydia Tuffy, and Katie Pedersen. Cherie spoke about topics related to body allignment,
