P.A.W.S. Program Profile

P.A.W.S. implements the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) standards by offering developmentally appropriate integrated language-based preschool classes. An integrated class is one which serves typically developing children as well as children with special needs. A flexible but consistent structure and routine is offered, including activities designed to promote language and listening skills, gross and fine motor development, and opportunities for imaginative and dramatic play. Music, sensory activities, and a wide variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities are employed, all of which support a strong foundation for learning. Weather permitting, outside play is a daily event.

The curriculum balances active and quiet play. Children work both alone and in small groups while teachers facilitate children's interactions with each other and their environment. Teachers observe each child's activities in order to tailor and expand the curriculum to meet individual needs and interests. Teachers encourage parents to maintain close communication with staff, and the staff works closely with parents to develop strategies for dealing with specific issues.

Daily activities include a variety of active and quiet individual and group projects. A typical day may consist of any of the following: free play, large and small group stories and activities, art or craft projects, dramatic play, sand or water play, blocks, books, games, puzzles, science exploration, and use of educational software and computers.
