Word Structure

 

Word Structure refers to categories of word parts that help students read and understand words as well as spell them
correctly.

Kindergarten

First Grade

Second Grade

Syllables

  • Understand that words that have one
    or more syllables
  • Able to clap out syllables

Mastery of all Kindergarten
Benchmarks

Syllables

  • Understand that every syllable has a
    vowel

Plurals

  • Understand plurals and plural forms- s (frogs, hats, bees) and -es (x, ch, sh, ss, s, tch, zz)

Verb Endings

  • Recognize and use endings that add
    -s to a verb to make it agree with the subject
  • Recognize and use endings that add
    -ing to make a present tense verb
  • Recognize and use endings that add
    -ed to make a past tense verb

Contractions

  • Begin to use will, am, is and not in
    contractions

Possessives

  • Begin to recognize that adding ‘s to a word creates a possessive noun

Base Words

  • Recognize root words (clapping,
    clap)

Benchmarks

Syllables

  • Understand how to divide syllables in words with double consonants
    (muffin) and double vowel (liar).

Plurals

  • Recognize changing spelling in
    irregular plurals (foot, feet)

Contractions

  • Recognize and use will, am, is and
    not in contractions

Possessives

  • Recognize that adding ‘s to a word
    creates a possessive noun

Verb Endings

  • Add -er to a verb to make it a noun
    (play, player)

Adjective Endings

  • Use -er and -est to show comparisons

Prefixes

  • Recognize common prefixes re-, un

Base Words

  • Remove the ending from a base word to make a new word

  • Begin to recognize open and closed
    syllables
    • Open syllable (ho-tel)
    • Closed syllable (kitten)
    • Syllable with a vowel and a silent e (hopeful)
    • Syllable with vowel combinations (poison)
    • Syllable with a vowel and r (corner)
    • Syllable in words with vv pattern (riot)
    • Plurals
  • Change -y to -i before adding -es
  • Understand singular and plural forms that stay the same (deer, lamb)

Verb Endings

  • Recognize and form tenses by adding –es, -ed, -ing, -d to verbs

Adjectives

  • Recognize and use endings that show comparisons (-er, -est)

Contractions

  • Use have, would, not, and had in
    contraction

  • Change adjectives to nouns by adding -tion, -ible for partial words and -able for whole words

Suffixes

  • Use suffixes -ous, -cious, -tious
    Possessives
  • Use an apostrophe after a word that
    ends in s, to show possession

Prefixes

  • Recognize and use the following
    prefixes (re-, un-, im-, in-, il-, dis-,
    non-, mis-)
  • Begin to use prefixes that refer to
    numbers (uni-, bi-, tri-, cent-, dec-,
    mon-, multi-, pent-, poly-, quad-,
    semi-)

Plurals

  • Add –s to words that end in a vowel
    plus o. Add –es to words that end in
    a consonant plus o or –es to words
    that end in a vowel plus o (radios,
    rodeos, potatoes, volcanoes)
